Constantia at a glance

Known for its beautiful greenbelts, wine farms and wildlife, the Constantia valley is also home to some of the most desirable residential real estate in SA.

Originally a farm belonging to Cape Governor Simon van der Stel, Constantia lies just below the Table Mountain nature reserve to the south of the Cape Town CBD, and is still characterised by lavish country homes set within large gardens, many of which boast spectacular mountain views.

It also contains its own wine route, which encompasses some of the oldest wineries in the Southern hemisphere - including Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Constantia Uitsig, Steenberg and Buitenverwachting - and attracts thousands of tourists a year.

And it forms the heart of the Constantiaberg area, which also contains the suburbs of Tokai, Bergvliet, Meadowridge and Diep River, as well as top residential estates like Steenberg, Stonehurst, Silverhurst and Silvertree.

Known as one of the most affluent areas in Cape Town, Constantia is particularly sought-after by established professionals and executives due to the proximity of excellent schools, shops, medical facilities, award-winning restaurants and extensive opportunities for outdoor sports and adventure activities.

Its secure lifestyle estates are also popular among international buyers and corporates seeking to accommodate senior staff working on contract in Cape Town.

Schools in the Constantiaberg area include the American International School of Cape Town, Herzlia, Norman Henshilwood High, Reddam House and the Constantia Primary and Constantia Waldorf schools.

Shopping options include the Constantia Village centre, which contains an extensive choice of speciality stores, fashion outlets, restaurants, coffee shops and anchors such as Pick 'n Pay and Woolies Food; the Constantia Village Courtyard with its collection of designer wear and luxury goods stores as well as a day spa; the Steenberg Village centre, the Meadowridge centre and the Blue Route Mall.

Major natural attractions include the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the Silvermine Nature Reserve, the Constantia Nek route to the Hout Bay fishing harbour and a whole array of excellent forest and mountain hiking and MTB trails.

For those seeking to live in Constantia, Chas Everitt International has an extensive selection of properties available for sale and for rent. Prices for family homes start at around R5m, and rentals at around R55 000 a month.
