Edenvale at a glance

Edenvale Past
Edenvale formed part of the farm number 9, Rietfontein. This farm was owned by Tobias Mynhardt who subdivided the farm in 1890 into four major areas, namely: Eastleigh, Edenvale, Modderfontein Boundary to Elandsfontein station, and the last quarter he retained.
In 1903, Edenvale was a cosy village, where a small group of Cornish miners settled. This year also saw the first land being sold by John Eden. Eastleigh was subdivided into ¼ acre stands. Stands were sold at 20Pounds, or 2Pound deposit and a monthly instalment of 1Pound. The low prices encouraged the public to purchase, build and settle. The majority of purchases were by the miners from the Rietfontein Mining Company.
Edenvale was proclaimed a village in 1939 and in 1954 a municipality. With water and electricity being made available and land being cheap, the area experienced a building boom. Industrialists and entrepreneurs took the opportunity to purchase land and so the Sebenza Industrial Areas were formed. Sebenza is a Zulu word which means “to work”.
