Orange Grove at a glance
Orange Grove is an old suburb situated North East of Johannesburg CBD. From the 1950s to 1980's it was known as "Little Italy "due to the number of Italian immigrants that lived there. Together with Jewish & Portuguese residents, the suburb had a distinct Cosmopolitan ambience. Recent decades have seen the decline of the suburb as a cultural enclave.
Orange Grove is bordered by Linksfield, Norwood, Orchards, Sydenham & Houghton. It has convenient access to the N3 Highway & OR Tambo Airport is an easy commute. Louis Botha Ave, a busy main route linking to JHB CBD, runs through Orange Grove. This main road is serviced by Rea Vaya Public Bus Transport & Mini Bus Taxis.
There are two public Primary Schools in Orange Grove, Orange Grove Primary & Linksfield Primary. A considerable advantage is that these 2 Schools are within walking distance of most of the suburbs' residences. Pupils attending these Schools usually move on to Highlands North Boys High or Waverley Girls High, both in nearby suburbs. Wits University & the University of Johannesburg are manageable distances traffic-wise.
Medical facilities & emergencies are close by at Linksfield Clinic, Edenvale Hospital & Charlotte Mxeke. Shopping is made simple with the proximity of Balfour Park Mall & Norwood Hypermarket Mall. Eastgate Mall & Bruma are slightly further but an easy drive.
Orange Grove Property Market caters for the lower to medium income group. Properties available are free-standing homes. The stands are small -below 500sqm. The houses are older & solidly built with few revamps. Some homes have low walls and are still visible from the street whilst others are surrounded by high walls with security improvements. A very small percentage of homes on sale have swimming pools. Most properties on the market offer a garden cottage which is a favourable selling point as it can be income-generating or ideal to work from home. The prices range from R 1million to R 1.8 million. Being so affordable should make it particularly appealing for first-time homeowners.
Orange Grove has been earmarked for a multi-million rand housing development. The proposal is for a high-density development that will still be aesthetically pleasing to the neighbourhood and create an urban village feel.
The Orange Grove Residents Association, which is active & effective, will be representing Property Owners to ensure that all processes are in the Residents interest and that the camaraderie & cooperation that exists in the Orange Grove Community is preserved.
