Kuruman at a glance

Kuruman is a thriving town situated on the Ghaap Plateau and is considered the “Oasis of the Kalahari”. Found on the main route between Namibia and Gauteng, as well as Cape Town via Upington, the Kuruman area and Kuruman property sales continue to exhibitgrowth owing to the unspoilt nature and wide variety of tourist attractions among other factors.

In relation to some of the major towns, Kuruman lies about 260 kilometres northeast of Upington, and over 400 kilometres northwest of Bloemfontein. The R31 and N14 roads both pass through and intersect in Kuruman.

What is unique about Kuruman as a town?

Also known as the fountain of Christianity because of its natural springs and missionary history, Kuruman is in many ways the jewel in the crown of the Northern Cape. The town was originally established by Robert Moffat, a Scottish missionary, and named after the mission station founded there. He completed construction of the Moffat Church in 1838, which is still in existence today and holds regular services.

The town is probably most famous for the iconic Eye of Kuruman, a natural spring found in the centre of town. This natural geological feature delivers upward of 20 million litres of water on a daily basis to the town and its inhabitants from deep within the earth – which accounts for the dense vegetation and thriving community in an otherwise dry and sparserregion. The spectacularly rare feature attracts vast numbers of national and international tourists every year.

Coupled with the infrastructural development of the area, this and other major attractions or landmarks of significance have notably stimuated the Kuruman property market. While the greenery highlights the leisurely aspect of the town, Kuruman is also host to flourishing mining and livestock activities including iron and manganese production, as well as rearing of cattle and game.

What are some of the outdoor activities in Kuruman?

Remarkably, visitors are continually intrigued by this beautiful and progressive town. There are a number of activities both permanent residents and tourists alike can partake in. The various game parks and farms located on the outskirts of Kuruman are ideal for family excursions and magical game drives.

The local mines also offer a glimpse into their operations in the form of planned tours and informative daytrips. The town goes further to offer excellent hunting territory, fast becoming one of the premier hunting destinations in all of South Africa. It also goes without saying that visitors seldom miss out on sufficiently exploring the spectacular Eye of Kuruman.

What is the Kuruman property market made up of?

The market composition of Kuruman real estate is made up exclusively of freehold (full title or freestanding properties) due to the love for space and leisurely living.  Kuruman properties can range from traditional country-style, to classic and all the way through to ultramodern options. The plot sizes tend to be reasonably large, with some ofthem being smallholdings for agricultural trade. Apart from the primary activities that have largely contributed to the emergence of more freehold Kuruman properties in the form of farms, the ongoing development of the area may still change the landscape to give rise to sectional schemes and estates in future. There are some open plots of land available to those who are looking to build their dream home or engage in trade.
