Montagu at a glance
The picturesque town of Montagu lies on South Africa’s famous Route 62, which so happens to be the world’s longest wine route. Montagu is just a stone’s throw away from the Robertson Wine Valley.
The village is located just two hours (around 180 kilometres) outside of Cape Town and Montagu property owners enjoy a truly ‘rural’ experience. If you are entering Montagu from the Breede River you will be travelling alongside the old Bain's road through the spectacular Cogmans Kloof before reaching the Hole in the Rock, known locally as the Gateway to the Klein Karoo.
A variety of accommodation is available in Montagu including Hotels, Lodges, Bed and Breakfasts, Self-catering cottages, Farms and Camp sites.
Montagu Education
The town offers access to good schools catering for learners of all levels. These include Montagu High School, Montagu Primary School, King’s Christian School as well as Laerskool Koo.
Given the town’s close proximity to Cape Town, learners can find some of the country’s best boarding schools just two hours outside of Montagu.
UCT, Stellenbosch and other Western Cape tertiary institutes are available options for further studies, especially for part-time students or those opting for distance learning with very few compulsory lectures.
Montagu Shopping
There is an array of shopping opportunities for ‘fresh’ or natural goods including wine, dried fruit as well as home industry styled goods.
There is also a shopping centre located within the town, as well as Standard Bank and ABSA branches close by. Any specialised shopping would best be served in the larger neighbouring towns such as Worcester and Paarl.
Montagu Health and Safety
Montagu offers a range of good doctors, dentists, optometrists as well as chemists. Should you find yourself needing more specialised medical treatment the town does play host to the state run Montagu Hospital as well as the Montagu Health Centre.
The town is policed by the SAPS; their police station can be found in Bath Street which is just off of Long Street.
