Checklist for choosing a great retirement location
Category News
Many people's hopes for a happy retirement are tied up with a certain kind of real estate, but they need to focus on choosing the right retirement destination as much as the right kind of retirement housing.
Some key considerations include:
*Your preferred climate and weather conditions. Some seniors dream of living where it's warm and even hot most of the year, while others prefer cooler locations. You may also have health issues that are affected by altitude or humidity and would eliminate some locations. In addition, you need to check out things like air quality, pollution levels and noise.
*The cost of living must align with your retirement budget. You need to establish the local cost of housing, food and transport as well as taxes and healthcare expenses. You also need to take into account that these costs will rise in future and make sure that you have enough financial leeway to cope with these increases.
*Ensure that you will have access to quality healthcare as you age. Consider the availability of hospitals, clinics, specialists and healthcare services in your preferred area.
*Safety and security should be another major concern. Research the safety and crime rates of any area you consider for retirement and choose a location where you feel secure and comfortable.
*Being close to family and friends is important in retirement but unfortunately many seniors only realise this after they move away from places they've lived all their lives and find they're very lonely - and then have to go through the upheaval of moving back again to be close to their loved ones.
*On the other hand, a new community with many social activities going on may be just the right place for retirees who don't have much family and may not have had time to make many friends during their working lives. If that's you, look for areas that offer recreational activities, cultural events, parks and amenities that align with your interests and lifestyle preferences, and opportunities for socialising, volunteering, or pursuing your hobbies and interests.
*Explore all the housing options available in the area. Whether you prefer to own a home or rent, you need to make sure that the local housing market meets your current needs - and has sufficient options available should you need to downsize or access assisted living in future.
