Ride or run, it's a beautiful day down south...

Category News

The Cape Agulhas Classic MTB and Trail Run event affords participants the rare opportunity to ride and run through parts of the spectacular Agulhas National Park as well as private farms in one of the most beautiful parts of SA.

And as one of the main sponsors of the event, Chas Everitt Cape Agulhas will not only be on the ground on the event days, which are the 27th and 28th December this year, but is already involved with preparations alongside Graham Bird, the seasoned sporting events organiser in charge of the event's logistics. Some routes were damaged during the flooding in September, but new ones are being carefully prepared to be as low impact on the environment as possible.

The event was created in 2013 after an appeal by the local Business Chamber to create an outdoor activity for people to enjoy together during the year-end holiday period. The founders were the late Naas Botha and Riana Human, as well as Philip van Wyk and Strepies van Wyk, principal of both Chas Everitt Cape Aghulhas and Chas Everitt Struisbaai.

The first year saw over 700 participants enter and it has since become an event that attracts many more entrants and brings thousands of visitors to the area every year. The main aim of the event remains to get families out and moving - with some challenges included now for those that like to push themselves.

The event always coincides with the full moon and spring low tide in order to allow participants to ride on hard sand for an immaculate section of coast from Brandfontein to Suiderstrand.

And this year the main venue has moved to Agulhas, a quaint little town at the southermost tip of Africa, where the two oceans meet. Nature abounds here and many local homes boast magnificent sea views. A tented event village will be erected amongst the melkhout trees on the open field next to Zoetendal Academy's sports fields, which will serve as the parking area. The category winners will receive special medals, and there will be lucky draw prizes from various local businesses.
