Saying goodbye to an icon
Category From Our CEO
Hello Everyone
Many of you already know that we recently said our final farewells to my Dad, who was the co-founder with my mother, Tilla, of the original Chas Everitt Estates in Johannesburg back in 1980 - and an icon of the South African real estate industry.
He passed away after contracting pneumonia in the hospital, where he was recovering after a fall and successful surgery to repair a leg and hip break. And as a family, we have been quite overwhelmed by the condolences we've received and the lovely messages about what a positive influence and inspiration he continued to be for so many in the industry he loved, even after his official retirement.
However, I thought it would also be fitting for me to share some more personal recollections to help paint a picture of the whole person that Charles Somerset Everitt was: a devoted husband, a loving father, a steadfast friend and a man of deep faith who set himself very high standards. A mentor, guide and role model in every aspect of my life, and not just in business.
He met Mom when they were both very young, and they stayed married for almost 60 years, standing together and setting us a wonderful example of patience and faith no matter what life threw at them. And there were many tough times.
But even though Dad was very determined and disciplined, he was also always the kindest, most compassionate person in the room. We knew that we could totally trust him and rely on him for sound advice in any situation.
He also revelled in family occasions and sharing stories and pranks with his children and grandchildren - and he took real delight in all our achievements, big or small. Always energetic and curious, he also really loved to dance - and travel and learn about the histories and cultures of other places.
Dad was of course proud of the fact that the "little business" he and Mom started had not only survived but evolved into one of the biggest real estate groups in SA, but he was most proud of the way our people continue to live by the values of trust, respect for all and integrity that were central to that original business.
It also made him happy when he thought of the opportunities the group continues to create for men and women around the country to achieve success and build solid futures for their families, not to mention the many thousands of people it has helped to become homeowners and property investors.
This, along with our personal memories of him, is the legacy of a remarkable man and we know he will be deeply missed by an enormous number of people. He was full of love, and in that spirit, I would like to wish you a peaceful and happy holiday season with your loved ones, and a wonderful new year.
Warm property regards
